this is an absolute requirement due to the signaling speed/level on
the cable. IE try using an IDE and plugging your IDE device in the
'other' connector (assuming you only have one, you should normally be
in the 'end' conector). This will wreck things.
You've just been lucky with your 27" cable. But the IDE spec specifically
says 18" length, with the second connector exactly 6" from the end
connector...
