I do not want to get off on a rant here, but ...
The shlocky hardware guys know that "low price" is the hook. But
remember, check things like shipping charges (I once found a company that
had a great price for NICs, but shipping was $15 each! - even if
I bought 10!) Check the return policy. Remember the baseline
in determining "if it works" is if it works with W95/8 (which in my
opinion does not really work. So qualifying SDRAM with W9X is like
having Bill Clinton hire his own secretaries) Buying
junk SDRAM at bargain prices may work for W95 but not a Linux SMP
box. If you try and return it, the vendor will test it with a DIMM
tester and tell you it is fine, but they will take it back for a 15%-20%
"re-stocking fee". Bend over.
Here is a radical idea. Let's try and support Linux friendly vendors
They are out there and they may cost a bit more then the your average
"hardware of the week shack", because they have to know something about
what they sell. But then again, you saved money and put a dollar in some
"don't have clue, fast-buck, Bill Gates wantabes" pocket and not
into the fledgling Linux market which we proclaim will dominate the world.
Just my Saturday morning rant. That is my opinion, I COULD BE WRONG.
