When I execute "shutdown -r now", the system starts shutting down, unmounting volumes, etc. It comes to a point where it says something like 'disabling symmetric i/o,' and hangs there. I have to hit the reset button at that point. I'm fairly sure that I think I've always seen this issue in SMP (from 2.1.120 on), but not in UP on the 2.0.xx kernels.
