I have another "solution" for your problem: First time I get the smp machine up, the
network card did not work and during bootup there was a message "too much work on
interrupt" printed out.
I solved this by enabling the pci options in the kernel, as there are pci bridge
support and optimization.
Just another suggestion, but it might help.
