Beg to differ... I got a 500VA Back-UPS at work a coupla weeks ago and the
price was around $105. This doesn't include the auto-shutdown, etc. You're
obviously going to pay more for that.
Since this isn't really on-topic to begin with, I'll sum up my responses to
this thread all right now..
1) NT can be super-stable on very select hardware. I'm not talking about
Linux super-stable (like 400 days), I'm talking about NT super-stable (like 3
months or so).. What makes linux great is that there are all of these little
workarounds that got written to help support every little hardware
difference. I suppose it's like this to some degree in NT, but I really
can't speculate on that.
2) In every unix I've worked with, no inetd has magically noticed the
changes without at least a kill -HUP, (-USR1 in the case of xinetd).
/etc/hosts is immediate, because it is parsed every time a host is looked up
by the resolver library.
3) SP5+IE5 has been pretty stable (again, NT-stable, not linux-stable) for me.
I think explorer has crashed only once or twice since I installed those
(about 2 months ago..) Unfortunately this is "good enough" for most people.
4) I don't believe that "constant" (as in once per day) power cycling has
been proven worse for computer systems than the "wear and tear" of leaving
them on constantly. Obviously, the initial shock of powering on a system is
probably bad for it, but the danger of possible fire from an overheated power
supply, or the possibility of power surges and spikes (if you don't have a
UPS) are just as bad or worse.
Besides, computer equipment is cheap, and if it lasts 3 years instead of 10
years, that's not really going to kill most people.
