Very strange !!!
I had similar problem when I recompiled my Linux SuSE 6.2 kernel for
SMP/686/NO387 optimization since the .config supplied with SuSE has not it
enabled by default even the SuSE kernel has it enabled ... but after
enabling it as <M> everything went fine .... hmmmm ... I think this is the
problem ... you have to enable it like <M> (as a module), not as <*> since
not all PPP options are kernel supplied (the module is always required to
have full PPP support) and remember also to recompile the medules for the
SMP optimization (make modules and make modules_install are important steps
after recompiling the kernel for SMP since also the modules require the
optimization ...)
