I have almost exactly the same setup running here with 2.2.13smp:
Intel DK440LX
2x Intel P2 333Mhz (512Kb ECC cache)
512Mb ram (ECC)
S3 Trio64 video
the sound is also disabled, as is the IDE controller, everything is SCSI.
The onboard ethernet is enabled but only compiled as a module and is not
used.
Additional hardware is the Intel 1000/Pro NIC, which is also used as a
module.
Mouse is not connected, a ps/2 keyboard is, on the connector closest to
the motherboard.

Have you also checked out the bios and made sure that MPS 1.4 is enabled
etc?
