seriously, i do not have a remedy for you. netfilter may simply be
broken at this time.

well, 2.3.x are development kernels. sometimes they blow up in your
face. sometimes they work great for you but you cannot expect it to
always be so. i guess you knew that.
if you can fix it, then do so. if you can diagnose and provide error
logs, that can help.
if you are depending on firewall/masquerade working, consider using
2.2.13. that's what the stable kernels are there for.
