Dear Multitasking buddies,
Although I've been running an SMP machine for a while I'm fairly
new to linux so please excuse me if these seem like pretty simple
questions.
I'm running RH 6.1 with the out of box SMP kernel on a dual PPro
machine. Now, so far all the software I've downloaded and installed has
been in .rpm format. However, I wanted to get the most recent version
of the balsa GTK+ email client. There was no .rpm available so I got
the source code and compiled that instead. When I ran ./configure one
of the messages it listed was that the program would not be built to be
multithreaded. My question is, is this just a program quirk, or should
I be using a different C/C++ compiler? I realize that if a program is
not multitrheaded (let alone SMP optomized) that it is going to have a
significant impact on the run time.
So, are things that are precompiled and built into .rpms
desently optomized and multithreaded, or is it better to complie from
sources myself? Moreover, if I do compile from my own source code,
should I be using a different C/C++ compiler?

Any opinions / advice is appreciated.
