I've booted 2.3.39 on my box and I run 2.2.x regularly on it (in fact for
a long time it was my primary build box).

Check your CPU jumpers. In paticular the manual has a deeply buried note that
you must disable address pipelining (one of the jumpers) for SMP or strange
things happen.
I've had no big problems with the board other than the fact it seems to chew
through a cpu fan a year
