let me get this straight, you want to keep the dual ppro system but
put it on a newer motherboard? this sounds like a first class way to
waste money. the dual ppro should still be a nice system (i still
enjoy my single and quad ppro boxen -- they're all i've got). if you
want to spend money, buy more ram. that seems to help me more than
anything else. 256MB shouldn't be too expensive these days.

if you are *really* *really* *really* itching to get something new,
just get a shiny new amd athlon. the single athlon will have at least
three times the raw megahertz of one of your ppro, probably be
cheaper, and blow the doors off the dual ppro on even if they're
hosted on a newer mobo. i mean, i love my ppros but you've got to
know when it's time to retire them.

on-board parts tend to suck. it's bad in windows and worse with
linux. avoid them if at all possible. get as generic as you can.

unless you are really short of pci slots^1 and the uw scsi mobo
upgrade costs less than $60, you may as well get a symbios 8751sp or
tekram dc-390f card. i think the adaptec mobo part is stable (i
haven't seen any posts to linux-kernel about it in months) but it has
historically been problematic.

what if you want to get u2w/lvd? why not get a tekram dc-390u2w at
$140 right now?

argh. *never* get on-board audio or video. don't even think about it
in passing.

buy a tulip card for $8-15 (depending on if you want 10 or 100 base).

[1] are there any mobos (not costing an arm and a leg) out there
sporting a reasonable number of pci slots -- i want at least 6,
preferably 8.
