When it's booting up do you see the message (i can't remember it exactly..)
"some version number - 3dfx - 3000 v.102, etc,etc,"
It should be the only thing on the screen and the first thing you see, even
before the bios screen. That will tell you if your machine is actually using
the vodoo card.

also look for something in the bios saying, video select order agp, pci. and
make sure pci is set first. (is the onboard video agp?)

I doubt it's a linux or smp problem, sounds more like a bios issue.
