I have heard something similar, but it was with the celeron II.  The jist of what
I read was the celeron II was a coppermine P3 w/128k cache, and as such required
the coppermine adapter to work SMP on a socket 370 board. (Yes its a simplified
explanation, I didnt pay the article much attention since I prefer SECC2 format).

I can neither confirm or deny the accuracy of the information, but I do seem to
remember the same question floating about regarding socket compatability when the
P3 coppermines first came out.  When i find the original article I will post the
link.
If I'm wrong (wouldn't be the first time), let me know.
