You don't see anything in the logs ? You can also configure the logs to be
written immediately, see man syslog.conf, so you have better chance of
seeing what goes on.

Well, I had somewhat the same problems, and found that kernel 2.4.0-test
series improved things dramatically.
Also, on UP, you don't have kernel compilation problems for example ? Like
segfaults appearing randomly when you compile ?
