Hi Matthew,

The OSDL organization (www.osdl.org) is producing specifications, performing integration and testing (effectively pulling together the results from a number of projects and making sure they work together), and eventually will provide certification (via LSB) for a set of functions that in the case of Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) are useful if not mandatory in the telecom environment. There are other groups working at OSDL for other mission critical environments.

The value of having Streams included in this capability set is that a number of distros will support this in their standard releases. Such support is considered very important by some of our customers. There is also advantage in having all of the distributions provide a standard Streams - LSB certified - or else we will have mixed proprietary solutions out there as well - and we'll all be developing our streams software for each and every OS - yet again.

As for the LiS-to-Kernel interface, it was not long ago that we saw Red Hat remove the then agreed kernel interface to streams and had to scramble to get something back in place that everybody could agree to. This was the event that triggered the effort at Ulticom to try to find a better way.

I hope this is useful information. If you still have doubts, please let me know. I'd also be happy to work with you or other folks at Adax towards the above goals.

Let me know what you think.

I do not understand - The LiS-to-Linux kernel
interface is an official interface negotiated
with, and supported by Linus. What will this
effort accomplish beyond that?

Hi All,

Representing Ulticom, I'm in the process of working to get Streams,
specifically LiS, listed as an official requirement and part of the
OSDL (osdl.org) Carrier Grade Linux version 2.0 Technical Specification.
The end-goal of the CGL activity is to get the various Linux distros to
provide and _support _the CGL suite of capabilities as a standard product.

This is a bit of an up-hill battle. The proposal position is that
there are a number of revenue generating applications that could
potentially be deployed on a Streams-able Linux and that this would be a
good way to get Linux into the core telecom networks. We are not
proposing that Streams be built into the kernel, but rather treated as a
separate capability with only supported 'hooks' in the kernel -
basically the LiS model.

We could use some help in this. In particular, in order to get Streams
into the CGL spec, we need to get the distros in particular, and the
other members of OSDL/CGL aware (and favorable) to the need for it - or
said another way, we need to make the everybody aware of the monetary
opportuniies that result from deploying Linux based products that use
Streams.

It would be useful if you could supply to me a list of company names,
contact names if you wish, and applications that would be candidates for
use on CGL Linux and would benefit from Streams being a standard part of
CGL. I am trying to build a general business case for Streams in Linux
as part of my work.

It would also be useful if you could contact the appropriate people in
your company that are involved with OSDL/CGL and ask them to 'push'
Streams as a requirement.

Finally, if people in your respective companies have influence with any
of the following OSDL distros or other involved companies, now would be
a great time for them to mention the need for Streams and the implicit
opportunities to their contacts at these companies.

Companys and Organizations to Influence

MontaVista
Red Hat
SuSE (Germany)
Turbo Linux (Japan)

Alcatel (France)
Cisco
Ericsson
Fujitsu
Hitachi
HP
IBM
Intel
Linux Works
NEC
Nokia
Timesys

osdl.org

I would also encourage any of you who might be thinking about getting
involved with OSDL / CGL, to contact the OSDL organization and consider
joining - and of course mention the Streams issue. The cost is
relatively low and they are looking for companies to join who will
actually use the resulting product - Carrier Grade Linux.

I would appreciate your support in whatever fashion works best for you.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
