Mine seems to come from here:

/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9custom/kernel/arch/i386/oprofile/oprofile.o

I did not do anything special to obtain the oprofile kernel driver.  It seemed to come with RH9.  I probably enabled something in the menuconfig to cause it to be compiled and installed via "make modules" and "make modules_install".  I am running a custom compiled kernel because I have installed the kgdb debugger package in the kernel.  It could very well be that you have to rebuild the kernel in order to get oprofile built and installed.

On the other hand, I have this file on our main server:

/lib/modules/2.4.20-24.9smp/kernel/arch/i386/oprofile/oprofile.o

I am pretty certain that the kernel on the server is "out of the box" -- no kernel building there.

Does any of this help?

David, when you do 'insmod oprofile' where/what module is picked up?

I also use RH9.
The oprofile rpm seems to be installed,
but I do not see oprofile module on the list.

# rpm -ql oprofile
/usr/bin/libpp.a
/usr/bin/op_dump
/usr/bin/op_dump_25
/usr/bin/op_help
/usr/bin/op_merge
/usr/bin/op_session
/usr/bin/op_start
/usr/bin/op_stop
/usr/bin/op_time
/usr/bin/op_to_source
/usr/bin/op_visualise
/usr/bin/opcontrol
/usr/bin/oprof_start
/usr/bin/oprofiled
/usr/bin/oprofpp
/usr/share/doc/oprofile-0.4
/usr/share/doc/oprofile-0.4/oprofile.html
/usr/share/man/man1/op_help.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/op_merge.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/op_start.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/op_stop.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/op_time.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/op_to_source.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/op_visualise.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/opcontrol.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/oprofile.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/oprofiled.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/oprofpp.1.gz

Still it fails to insmod oprofile:

# opcontrol --init
modprobe: Can't locate module oprofile
modprobe: Can't locate module oprofile
