Yes I use your a31-sdcard.img and replace u-boot.bin in the linux dir
with one built from scratch.

No.

Note I've finished up my sun6i patch series (which includes your initial
work) to make it ready for pushing to the official u-boot-sunxi git
repo. So if you're going to play with this, please make sure you've
the latest code from:
https://github.com/jwrdegoede/u-boot-sunxi/commits/sunxi-a31-axp221

(no functional changes, just cleanups / FIXUP patches merging)
