Yes, the guy designing those confirmed he's using a USB-SATA adapter and the 
board itself also has a 12V source for powering the HDD. I have not tested it 
yet, but I'll report back when I do. I don't suppose you'll get more than 
25-30MB/s which I get now using the USB external hard-drive.

No idea about SMART though, I've had mixed experiences with USB-to-SATA and 
smartctl.
