Anyone to feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
When they made their kickstarter they have bet on R8 which is repackaged A13 in smaller form, R8 module which they wanted to use was priced alone $16 by Allwinner while the repackaged chip R8 at $4.80 without any memory. No wonder for these numbers as A13 was sold in millions while R8 was probably just at proto or small run and never made it to product. (at least I have not hear for product based on R8 beside the CHIP prototypes). I made blog post about this https://olimex.wordpress.com/2015/06/05/how-to-get-in-the-news-tell-people-that-you-will-make-and-sell-something-which-cost-you-20-for-9/ as many people were speculating how R8 cost $1 etc etc. We start to get requests for designing devices with R8 and people were shocked why my calculations were for prices above $9 :) Here are my speculations: Their business model is to sell CHIP on loss and break even with the shipping and accessories, which they did successfully. Initially they were thinking they will sell 5000 CHIPs, so everything they lose by selling these CHIPs was actually good investment in free advertisement all around, but they sold x10 more than they have planned and to reduce their loss with CHIPs they had to re-designed later with A13, so the CHIPs they shipped were with A13 on them not R8. This is why you can't see any difference. CHIP is open source hardware, so you can see ther github repo https://github.com/NextThingCo/CHIP-Hardware Alpha version for the kickstarter is with R8, version 1.0 which they shipped is with A13 and separate DDR and Flash -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "linux-sunxi" group.
