video modes for voodoo3

Does anyone know why I can't seem to use any video modes other than 0-9 with my voodoo3?  I know my card supports a lot more, but my program crashes when I use try to use other modes, and when i use hasmode() all I get are 0-9 and 32.  I need to do 800x600x16M for what I am doing.
