chipset?

I want to know where does the chipset driver locate,in kernel or svgalib?

My graphic card is Matrox Graphics Millennium G200 AGP.Svgalib don't have this kind of 
chiptset, so I choose VESA chipset(set in libvga.conf).But I can't use vga_setmode to 
set video mode to 1024x768. In other side, I can use XWindows in 1024x768.What should I
do?
