Unable to do even 1024x768x256 on Voodoo3 3000 PCI

All,
    I have a Voodoo3 3000 PCI and I didnt even doing a vga_hasmode() and
vga_setmode( G1024x768x256 ) and got a blank screen. Later I tried and found
vga_hasmode() returns false. I was trying to write a fractal and now they
run at 320x200x256 :-<
