tapes with damaged Headers

I have two QTR-1 Travan Tapes which cause endless shoeshining to my tapedrive. 
The headers of the two seem to be damaged. At least that is what I read in my 
 /var/log/messages and what I guess from the fact that my drive works fine with
another(new)one.
Is there a way to reuse them? They are nearly new tapes.
