You are seeing 1.2Mbits/sec, but there is more than your data being
written to the drive.  Honestly, your performance (without compression)
is about as good as it gets with that configuration.

BTW - for $245 you can get a Seagate TR-4 drive that does 600KBytes/sec
(4x the speed of your Ditto), doesn't use propriatary tapes, and plugs
in to your IDE bus.  Just a thought.
