Do so.
Compile a kernel *without* (no joking, with*out*) any ftape
support, as per documentation.
You will want a newer modutils package, 2.1.xx (xx being 81+
IIRC) to circumvent certain command line parameter problems
with the 2.0.xx packages. While the documentation will claim
you need a 2.1-Kernel, that is not true: A 2.0 will work.
