Using ftape with SCSI and HP SureStore DAT24eU

I'm using Linux with kernel 2.0.36, and I've installed ftape 4.02 according to the 
instructions. However, when I try to access the drive, I always get error messages 
(and they may vary). My question is:

- is my system supported by ftape?
- if so, do I need some special setup since I use SCSI?
