Let me guess:
You are using tar -cp*z*f /dev/TAPE or similar, using gzip for
compression. Tar cannot check if it's grandchildren return OK,
so tar just returns. Of course gzip is still grinding on the tape.
If that's indeed your situation, I would considering to stop that
practice immediately. One single error in your tape will corrupt
almost the complete archive. If you need compression, you may
want afio (which compresses individual files, so only they die).
