All those questions are answered in the ftape and taper documentation.
Read the README and/or INSTALL files and anything else you may find.
Don't forget to download the ftape-doc and/or ftape-tools archives.
Between those you'll find a lot of info (lot of it in html format
for easy navigation).
There's a whole testing procedure layed (laid?) out in one of them.
