First, a couple of obvious questions:

What kernel revision are you running?

Is SCSI tape enabled in the kernel?

You do know that SCSI tape drives do not use the ftape driver ... ?

Next:

The device will show up in /proc/scsi/scsi if the kernel SCSI adapter
driver sees it.  So, 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' will tell you if the kernel
sees the drive.

If it is seen, you access it as the /dev/st0 or /dev/nst0 device
(assuming there's only one tape drive).

Finally:

Are you aware of how backup in a Unix environemnt works?
