Hi - you presumably do not use the most recent ftape version, don't you.
As far as I can remember older ftape versions counted the block numbers 
(in contradiction to what is usual among SCSI tapes) not from BOT (=beginning
of tape), but from the first block of each archive; but if I#m not mistaken -

Forget the tell result - and just try to restore the data beginning from
the position the tape has reached after your fsf command. It should work -
hopefully...
