You need a newer version of ftape (yes, an unstable version). I'm
using ftape-4.x-1999_02_26 with fair success.

Then, you should throw this drive away (as I will as soon as I save up
for one that's worth anything). These drives barely work (and in my
case don't work) even under windows. They just don't print enough
error messages under windows so that you would know that it wasn't
working.
