Hi folks!

Now, the following question has been asked hundreds of times here,
but never to my knowledge been answered satisfactorily.

"Which tape drives are supported under Linux."

I want to buy a tape drive myself and partly out of my own interest,
offer to compile and maintain a list of supported Tape drives which
I can post regularly to this list and leave on a http server.

SuSE (www.suse.de) maintains a "Component Database" which states
whether a hardware component works with Linux, but almost all of the
tape drives have "unknown" as an entry (some entries have a
"probably works" flag set, but that`s no good to me if I want to be
100% sure).

Feedback is welcome as to whether something like what I propose
exists and what you lot think of it!

I would suggest the participants on this list contact me with the
following information on the drives which they are using (open to
suggestions):

- Tape drive Manufacturer
- Model
- Capacity (compressed and uncompressed)
- Type (DAT / etc.)
- Interface (SCSI / IDE / ParPort)
- Supported: basic backup functions
- Supported: advanced functions
- required ftape version (useful? Bearing in mind that this is a FAQ.)
- Still being manufactured (Yes/No)?
- Any additional information needed to get it to work :-)

The approx. cost (in US$) of the drive and also the cartridges would
facilitate buyers decisions, or at least show what price category it
is in. What do you think?

I`m not an expert with these tape drives, so any feedback on the
above is WELCOMED!

Mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (!! with TAPE in the subject to avoid my spam
filer !!) or here in the mailing list!

All the best,

Barry Hill
