mt -f /dev/whereever rewind
or
mt -f /dev/whereever offline
or
mt -f /dev/whereever unload (well, it depends on your drive...)
or
mt -f /dev/whereever reset (oh, I don't remember if mt-st contains this...?)
The first two suggestions should really help...I hope...
