Verification: you can add --verify to the command line you mentioned above
Backing up certain directories: Instead of / at the end of your own
command line you can state e. g. /home/ or /etc/

First of all upgrading to taper-6.9 or even better 6.9a is recommended.
As far as 800 kb is concerned: There is a section in "Change your
preferences" / "Tape drive preferences' where you can define the tape size.
If you already did that, I must say, I don't know - I myself haven"t stumbled
over this problem with taper - but over some others regarding the restore
procedure.

Well, you said you preformed a backup, so setting io etc. shouldn't be
a problem any more. Nevertheless: It depends on what kind of hardware
you have; if you should really be forced to define those ressources
it is necessary only for the ftape-package, that is the driver for your
tape drive (kernel space) - it doesn't affect your backup programs (like
tar or taper), because they themselves access ftape/zftape/... in order
to control your hardware.

Never heard of KDat. Seems to belong to KDE. Under redhat 6.0 I have
KDE, but I haven't looked after KDat so far.

I myself prefer afio-2.4.5: Simple, transparent, reliable, small.
Rescue system: I prefer a special "mini linux", called tomsrtbt:
A complete Linux distribution that fits on one single floppy. Havind added
afio to this floppy, I have quite a good restore system.
Bye, Juergen.
