Maybe you consider also SCSI drives?

I myself use Tandberg NS 20 PRO, a SCSI streamer, that is able to 
store 10 GB uncompressed. It has hardware compression and read after
write (although: I do not neglect a verification). My compression for
backing up / is about 1 : 2.3 (it differs a bit, of course) Controller is 
Dawicontrol 2975U  (driver: sym53c7xx or alternatively the older
ncr53c8??).
