Stefan,
ftformat and friends are for use with the floppy-based TR and QIC-80/120
drives. Your 525 is a SCSI drive, so you use mt from the mt-st package.
Notes:
First, SCSI tapes don't require formatting.
Second, you CAN erase them using mt as so:
mt -f /dev/st0 erase
Otherwise, you just write to the tapes with tar, BRU, cpio, etc.
Make sure that you use the correct media for the drive:
DC6525 = 525MB
DC6250 = 250MB
DC6150 = 150MB
No other tape formats work for writing in that drive.
