Pretty much a mix--quite a few large compressed files, but also a couple
of linux kernel source trees, as well as a bunch of MS Office docs, HTML
files, /usr/man/* /usr/doc/* and such. This issue is only biting me when
I do a full backup.

Yup, even grabbed mt-st-0.5b from metalab and recompiled.

That too. Interestingly, when I do use 90m tapes, I get over 3GB data
written, so I know that compression is working. But as soon as I pop in a
DDS2 tape, it seems like compression turns off, even when I do a "mt
compression 1".
