Hello,
the taper maintainer has fixed some problems in taper-6.9a.
Maybe upgrading to this release prevents taper from seg faulting.
It can be found at

http://www.omen.com.au/~yusuf/

But be warned: EVen 6.9a is not perfect yet. I faced some problems
with the restore module and some regarding the unattended mode.

There are different causes for write errors.
- Maybe your computer is too slow;
- Somebody on this list said that upgrading the kernel 2.2.5-15 to a more
recent one had helped to avoid write errors. The default kernel shipped with
redhat 6.0 is something that should really be upgraded.

Perhaps your write errors don't mean too much trouble: I myself was able to
run ditto even on an old 386, at least as far as data of about 50 MB was to
be backed up. I got those write errors as well, but nevertheless a verification
resp. a restore proved that the data wasn't corrupted at all.

this is presumably a taper problem, not an ftape related one.

Well, there exist some more recent versions of ftape, but I don't know
if upgrading is of any help for you.
