This is regarding ftape-tools, but I hope perhaps the members of this list can help me.   I am trying to compile version 1.07 of ftape-tools.  Following the instructions in the Install readme, I ran configure, and then make (as root, of course).  When I run make, the machine begins to compile, but then quits with the following output:

configure_input='Generated automatically from Makefile.in by configure.'
srcdir=/usr/src/RPM/SOURCES/ftape-tools-1.07
top_srcdir=/usr/src/RPM/SOURCES/ftape-tools-1.07
linking /usr/src/RPM/SOURCES/ftape-tools-1.07/ to
ln: /usr/src/RPM/SOURCES/ftape-tools-1.07/: hard link not allowed for directory
configure: error: can not link  to /usr/src/RPM/SOURCES/ftape-tools-1.07/
make[2]: *** [Makefile] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/RPM/SOURCES/ftape-tools-1.07/src/scripts'
make[1]: *** [uninstall-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/RPM/SOURCES/ftape-tools-1.07/src'
make: *** [uninstall-recursive] Error 1

So, what is up here?  Is this a bug in the configure script, or do I need to edit my makefile in some way?  The kernel version is 2.2.9-27mdk, on an intel pentium.
GCC is version 1.1.3.  Thank you for any insights into this problem you might have.
