With a 2.2 kernel, you need to use the 'unstable' version of ftape
available from
http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/ftape/archives/ftape-4.x/unstable/
Another possibility would be to use the built-in ftape-3.04d in the
kernel source, but the unstable version should work fine for you. 4.02
and 4.03-pre will not work, however.
