isn't this a hint for adding a group named "modem"? If mgetty is started
by init a login procedure is executed, so your client has to
authenticate itself according to the server's /etc/passwd.

By the way: This is really completely off-topic at linux-tape. And what's 
more: There are special groups dealing with mgetty. At least
comp.os.linux.networking would be a better place for your
questions.
