I am having the _exact_ same problem and it is driving me insane.

Debian pre2.2 with newst glibc, kernel 2.2.{11,12,13pre6}, Pertec MyTape 800
and also an old Connor 250.
I tried various ftape source package, inclding 4.03-pre3, and back down to
what is in the 2.2 kernel tree.

Same here, it used to work until some time ago (I ignored quite a few cron
mails about failures as it is a home system, however it is getting time to
fix this...). I am quite sure that it also worked for me with 2.2.* kernels
last winter/spring.
I am also somewhat familiar with ftape having used it since 1994.

I do have ftformat, and it also fails. It panics about not being able to
find its position on the tape.
Could this be a glibc 2.1 issue?
Cheers, Dirk
