Why are you trying to access the first SCSI generic device. Take a look
at "dmesg | less" after boot, or "/var/log/message" to see what devices
your kernel found.

I think you will find your tape on "/dev/nst0"; first SCSI tape, mode
0 , non-rewinding. There also may be a link from "/dev/tape".
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Sep 28 13:45 /dev/tape -> /dev/nst0
There is a "/dev/st0" rewinding; but this is for the yo-yo mode. Be sure
you understand this creature before use.
