In the tarball I downloaded, there is a
scripts/kernel-inclusion/gokernel.sh file that copies ftape into the
kernel tree, and allows you to set it up from within the kernel
configuration.  I'll try it your way now.

I should note that the settings were from my previous working setup,
except that they used to be under the ftape settings instead of
ftape_internal.
