There it goes:
ftape-4.x-1999_09_11 - compilation & installation OK;
ftape-tools-1999_09_11 - compilation bug here, right at the texi documentation.
Once I was interested in the binaries only, I've deleted the sources of the docs
(text, html, sgml) and messed up a little with the Makefiles in order to proceed
with the installation.

I own an Iomega External Ditto 2GB, therefore the �several tests and backups� are
related to the backpack module.
