I got the same errors trying to build ftape 4.03 with kernel 2.2.x.
They are no more existing in version ftape-4_x-1999_09_11.
Pay attention that you have to run the script
scripts/kernel-inclusion/gokernel.sh with appropriate parameters in order to
patch the kernel (or the ftape structure -I don't know-). Having done this,
it'll be possible even to use the "make menuconfig" command of the kernel
with correct handling of the ftape options.

Now please let me put some questions.
1) Do anyone know why the field "timeout" had disappeared from structure
"task_struct" from kernel 2.0 to 2.2? Is this field of no importance in
ftape handling?
2) It should be very useful that someone took some hours of his time to
up-to-date the documentation of ftape. In fact, it is still uncorrect
expecially with regards of the compatibility of new versions of the kernel
with respect of the "unstable" versione of ftape.
