I have the same problem.  (What kernel are you running?  I'm running
2.2.10)  I got the following two suggestions for this.  Neither were
verbose enough to really be helpful.  There's a HOWTO at
http://www.calderasystems.com/LDP/HOWTO/Ftape-HOWTO.html.  I'm reading
it now.
