For Iomega the 2 GB you need at least the 3.04b or c (i.e.
you want the 3.04d) or you just take the newest 'unstable'[1].

should not be neccessary, since the ftape modules can (and
should) be compiled separately. Actually, disable ftape in
the kernel (so you can put in the newest ftape, the one in
the kernel is very old).
I take it that you looked at http://www.LinuxTapeCert.org and
clicked on TechHelp.

[1] They are stable. But the latest 'stable's in the 4.xx
series do *not* compile with kernel 2.2.x ... a kernel
API changed.
