As fas as I understand tapes in general, you just start
writing at the beginning, and that's it. The tape writes a
'here ends all usable date' (2 filemarks) at the end of the
recording. If you skip to the end and continue to write, the
second filemark is erased, so it's just a 'end of one file'
mark anymore.
That also means that your tape won't restore one bit of data
even if you write a short file over a long one. Of course
people really interested in your data won't find that a
challenge :-) (not that erasing/formatting would help that
much either.)
