I've experienced erratic operation with ftape-4.x-1999_09_11
since upgrading to kernel 2.2.14 (on two systems).
This has been reported to the ftape bug page (/dev/null?) but
as yet I haven't received a response.
I had no problems with kernel 2.2.12 which I had been using
previously.
You could try kernel 2.2.12 on a dedicated backup server with
a package such as afbackup (GPL) or BRU (commercial).
I currently use afbackup-3.2.5pl1 and like it hugely.
